Stewards, Not Owners - 1 of 5

Remembering Who the Vineyard Belongs To

Title: Stewards, Not Owners (1 of 5)

Subtitle: Remembering Who the Vineyard Belongs To

Scripture: Matthew 21:33

Introduction:

On Saturday, August 9th, we explored Jesus’ parables of the tenants and the wedding banquet — two stories that challenge us to remember our place in God’s Kingdom. The takeaway was clear: everything in our care ultimately belongs to Him. This week, we’ll break the passage into five daily reflections, slowing down to let each truth sink deeper into our hearts.

Scripture

“There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard. He fenced it, dug a winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenants and went away.”

Matthew 21:33

Observation

Jesus begins with a scene of deliberate care and provision. The master plants, protects, and equips the vineyard so it can thrive. The audience would recognize this from Isaiah 5 — the vineyard is God’s people, and the master is God Himself. The tenants are caretakers, not owners, yet this opening line hints at a coming conflict: will they remember their role?

Application

Everything in my hands — my relationships, resources, and opportunities — is a trust from God. My role is not to hoard them for myself, but to steward them for His purposes. Today, I need to look at one area where I’ve been acting like the owner and ask: how can I surrender this back to God?

Prayer

Father, thank You for entrusting me with so much. Teach me to live with open hands, remembering that I am a steward, not an owner. Let my life bear fruit that honors You. Amen.
