Introduction:
Jesus’ response cut through the trap: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” With one sentence, He acknowledged the reality of living under earthly systems while affirming God’s ultimate authority.
Scripture
They said, “Caesar’s.” Then He said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
— Matthew 22:21
Observation
Jesus teaches that it’s possible to honor legitimate earthly responsibilities without compromising our allegiance to God. Caesar’s image may be on the coin, but God’s image is on us. Earthly powers can claim what bears their mark — but only God has a rightful claim on all we are.
Application
I can respect and participate in the systems I live under — paying taxes, following laws — without letting them own my identity or dictate my values. Today, I will approach a civic or work-related responsibility with integrity, remembering that my ultimate allegiance is to God.
Prayer
Lord, help me honor the rightful claims of the world I live in while keeping my heart fully Yours. Teach me to live with wisdom, integrity, and loyalty to You above all. Amen.
