Introduction:
On Saturday, we learned that the denarius — the coin used for the Roman tax — carried Caesar’s image and a blasphemous claim of divinity. This was more than currency; it was a daily reminder of Roman oppression. Jesus’ next move was brilliant: before answering, He asked His challengers to identify the image on the coin.
Scripture
“Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. And Jesus said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?”
— Matthew 22:19–20
Observation
By holding up the coin and pointing to Caesar’s image, Jesus exposed an important truth: whatever bears an image belongs to the one whose image it carries. This sets up His larger point — that while the coin belongs to Caesar, human beings bear a different image entirely.
Application
If I belong to the One whose image I bear, then my loyalty, decisions, and identity should reflect Him. This challenges me to live in a way that makes His ownership over my life unmistakable. Today, I will ask myself: Does my life clearly show whose image is stamped on me?
Prayer
Father, thank You for making me in Your image. May my words, actions, and decisions reflect that I belong to You. Keep me from giving myself to anything or anyone who is not my true King. Amen.
