Introduction:
In Saturday’s lesson, we saw Jesus confronted with a trap: answer in a way that pleases Rome and lose credibility with His people, or answer in a way that pleases the crowds and risk death. The Pharisees and Herodians thought they had forced Him into a corner. But instead of choosing their categories, Jesus reframed the entire conversation around the Kingdom.
Scripture
“Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites?”
— Matthew 22:17–18
Observation
The question was never about taxes — it was about allegiance. The trap was designed to force Jesus into a lose-lose scenario, but He refused to be defined by their categories. Instead, He exposed their motives and prepared to answer from a higher perspective.
Application
The world will often present me with false choices: compromise my convictions or lose something I value. Jesus’ example invites me to seek the third way — the Kingdom way — that honors God and preserves integrity. Today, I’ll look at one area where I’ve felt “cornered” and ask God for His wisdom to reframe it.
Prayer
Lord, give me the courage to step out of the false choices the world presents and the wisdom to see Your Kingdom path. Help me not to be trapped by fear or pressured into compromise, but to answer in a way that honors You. Amen.
